Former
Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky is embroiled in a child
sex abuse scandal. Authorities say head coach Joe Paterno allegedly
knew of one incident and reported it to the athletic director. Sandusky
was allegedly caught raping an 11-year-old boy in a shower by one of
Penn State’s assistants and he reportedly engaged in sex with several
other young boys. The Pennsylvania attorney general indicted Sandusky
with 40 charges of sex crimes against young boys on the heels of a
three-year investigation into allegations that Sandusky had
inappropriate contact with a 15-year-old boy over the course of four
years – beginning when the boy was just 10-years-old. A grand jury
identified a total of eight boys singled out for sexual advances or
sexual assaults by Sandusky from 1994 through 2009. At least 20
incidents allegedly took place while he was employed by Penn State.
Meanwhile, two high-ranking Penn State officials have been charged with
failing to report the sexual assault and then lying to a grand jury
investigating Sandusky. The university’s director of athletics, Timothy
Mark Curley, and senior vice president for finance and business, Gary
Charles Schultz, are each charged with single counts of perjury and
failure to report. Schultz position includes oversight of the university
police department. After an emergency meeting of the
university's Board of Trustees late last night, Curley requested to be
placed on administrative leave so he could devote time to defend
himself. Schultz will step down and go back into retirement, officials
said. Paterno, who last week became the coach with the most wins in
Division I football history, wasn't charged, and the grand jury report
didn't appear to implicate him in wrongdoing.
